A Choice of Nightmares

From darkness have I come?

To see light,

Fidelity,

    Reality…

But still clouds hang on my eyes

Even in the broad light.

Harshness and melancholy befriending

Man who unmanly exists?

Being always in seeming and never in being,

Always talking, rarely acting.

Fie on it! Oh fie, fie !

That life, that long wild night,

That fire that increases its appetite with eating,

Is no longer dotty about.

Let’s wring my neck out

And be ever in the pure darkness,

Though the Everlasting has fixed

His canon against self-slaughter.

O GOD! O GOD!

Forgive my frailty, this nightmare choice,

For I am not Hercules nor a lion

Able to survive in this vast desert,

Neither am I an ant to exist under stones.
